Kazak
late 19th century, 274 x 146 cm, South West Caucasus
Five huge Memling guls within octagonal surrounds fill the grass-green field so completely that the weaver was only able to accommodate a very few additional designs. In the white-ground main border, small horizontal cartouches with interior C-motifs and outer hooks are arranged into a surrounding band. The colour combinations and the austere style of drawing are typical features of Armenian weavings.
RIPPON BOSWELL, A 39, 13 November 1993, lot 37 *** BAUSBACK, PETER, Antike Orientteppiche. Brunswick 1978, pp.169, 171
RIPPON BOSWELL, A 48, 22 November 1997, lot 194
Condition
A larger repair of diverging colours in the second medallion from the top and two repairs in the second medallion from the bottom. The brown sections are heavily corroded in places. Some of these areas have been repiled, while others have not. Otherwise, pile in good condition and at its original height. The right border has been repiled over a length of approximately 48 cm from the upper finish. Edges restored in places.
