Kendal & Dent Sterling Silver Open Face Key-Wind Pocket Watc...
Kendal & Dent Sterling Silver Open Face Key-Wind Pocket Watch Birmingham 1894
A late Victorian sterling silver open-face pocket watch by Kendal & Dent, London, hallmarked for Birmingham, 1894. The watch features a white enamel dial with black Roman numeral hour markers, a rail-track minute ring, and a subsidiary seconds dial at the 6 o'clock position. The dial is printed with the text KENDAL & DENT LONDON. The movement is a manual key-wind and key-set type, accessed via a winding aperture on the silver inner dust cover.
The sterling silver case is decorated with engine-turned engraving to the back, featuring a central vacant circular cartouche, and a reeded coin-edge to the middle section. The interior of the case back bears a series of struck hallmarks including a lion passant for sterling silver, an anchor for the Birmingham assay office, and a lowercase letter u in a shield for the date 1894. An oval cartouche contains the maker's mark K&D. The alphanumeric code C42 is stamped below the hallmarks, and the serial number 121160 is hand-scribed on the interior. The pendant and bow also bear partial hallmarks. A brass winding key is attached to the silver bow by a short leather cord and a brass swivel clasp.
Case Size: 50 mm.
More Information
The white enamel dial is largely intact but shows an accumulation of dirt and dust beneath the crystal (photo 2). The gold-tone minute hand and the sub-seconds hand are present; however, the hour hand is missing, leaving only a short metal stub at the centre (photo 9). The silver case shows significant surface oxidation and heavy tarnishing, particularly visible around the bezel, pendant, and case edges (photo 4). Fine surface scratches and wear to the engine-turned decoration are consistent with age and use (photo 5). The crystal exhibits several fine surface scratches and dirt around the rim (photo 1). The internal movement is untested and the watch is sold as requiring service or repair due to the missing hand and overall condition.
