Kennedy Assassination: Jim Garrison Signed and Inscribed Book to Rosemary James, Reporter Who Broke His JFK Investigation

[ translate ]

New Orleans attorney (1921–1992) known for his investigations into the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and for the prosecution of businessman Clay Shaw as part of a conspiracy to assassinate JFK. Signed book: On the Trail of the Assassins: My Investigation and Prosecution of the Murder of President Kennedy. Later printing. NY: Sheridan Square Press, 1988. Hardcover with dust jacket, 6.25 x 9, 342 pages. Signed and inscribed on the opening Dealey Plaza route page in ink, "May, 1990, For Rosemary James, with memories of days of yore — Jim Garrison." In fine condition, with light wear to the price-clipped dust jacket.

The recipient, Rosemary James, was a New Orleans States-Item reporter who helped uncover Garrison’s then-secret investigation into the Kennedy assassination. Working with two fellow reporters, James pursued the story through sources and an examination of travel-expense vouchers for investigators in Garrison’s office, culminating in a front-page story on February 17, 1967, that disclosed the investigation. James continued reporting on the case, including Garrison’s subsequent arrest of New Orleans businessman Clay Shaw, and co-authored with fellow reporter Jack Wardlaw the 1967 book Plot or Politics? The Garrison Case & Its Cast. Shaw’s prosecution culminated in a 1969 trial and acquittal, an episode Garrison would recount two decades later in On the Trail of the Assassins. His 1990 inscription to James, "with memories of days of yore," recalls their shared history dating to her reporting on his investigation.
