Kennedy, Thomas, Goldberg, Stevens & More! Fantastic Supreme Court Collection!
Envelope/First Day Cover

collection of eight signed first day covers associated with members of the United States Supreme Court, arranged from top to bottom and left to right as Lewis F. Powell Jr., Clarence Thomas, William H. Rehnquist, John Paul Stevens, Sandra Day O'Connor, Anthony M. Kennedy, Byron R. White, and Arthur J. Goldberg. Each envelope combines a judicial, constitutional, or American historical theme with period United States postage and cancellation marks, and each bears the autograph of the respective Justice. Several covers predate the signer's appointment to the Supreme Court and were evidently signed later, making the group a collection of autographs rather than a set created contemporaneously with each Justice's tenure. Each measures 3.675 x 6.5 inches.

The Lewis F. Powell Jr. cover commemorates the bicentennial of the Supreme Court, 1790-1990, and bears a 25-cent Chief Justice John Marshall stamp canceled at Washington, D.C., on February 2, 1990. Powell has inscribed it in blue ink, "With best wishes / Lewis F. Powell Jr / Justice / Supreme Court." Powell joined the Court on January 7, 1972, and retired in 1987, so he was a retired Justice when this cover was canceled and signed. The Clarence Thomas cover commemorates the 1959 Lincoln Sesquicentennial and bears Thomas's large signature across the lower portion. The William H. Rehnquist cover is a 1977 First Day Cover devoted to the public's right to speak, bearing a block of Freedom to Speak stamps and Rehnquist's signature at lower right. The John Paul Stevens cover commemorates Chief Justice John Marshall and the 40-cent regular postage series of 1954-56, with Stevens's signature prominently placed across the right half.

The Sandra Day O'Connor cover, dated September 21, 1964, is devoted to international narcotics control and bears O'Connor's full signature in the lower right portion. The Anthony M. Kennedy cover commemorates the 1990 bicentennial of the Supreme Court and bears the 25-cent John Marshall stamp, canceled at Washington, D.C., on February 2, 1990, with Kennedy's signature beneath. The Byron R. White cover commemorates Oliver Wendell Holmes and bears the 15-cent Holmes stamp with a Washington, D.C., March 8, 1968 first-day cancellation; White has signed prominently in blue ink. The Arthur J. Goldberg cover is a mailed envelope addressed to the Reverend Friederich de Leu Pettet of Butler, New Jersey, bearing a New York World's Fair stamp and Washington, D.C., July 18, 1964 cancellation, with Goldberg's bold blue signature across the lower portion. The covers show varying degrees of toning, handling wear, minor soiling, and occasional creasing consistent with age and postal or collecting history.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
