Kenneth Ken Price (American, 1935-2012), Frog Cup, 1968, Color Lithograph

Kenneth “Ken” Price (American, 1935–2012) was a Los Angeles-born artist who helped establish ceramics as a serious form of contemporary sculpture. After earning his BFA from the University of Southern California, he studied with Peter Voulkos at the Otis Art Institute and completed an MFA at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. While Voulkos favored large, forcefully worked clay, Price concentrated on intimate cups. Price worked with Tamarind during the 1960s and later collaborated extensively with Gemini G.E.L. His work is held by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Frog Cup, 1968, color lithograph on Copperplate Deluxe wove paper by Kenneth “Ken” Price. The composition isolates a squat green cup resting directly on the body of a brightly patterned frog, whose gray, yellow, orange-red, and blue forms create a compact hybrid of vessel and animal against the otherwise unprinted sheet. Printed by Daniel Socha and published by the Tamarind Lithography Workshop, Los Angeles; the work is recorded as Tamarind catalogue no. 2497. The edition consisted of 20 impressions with nine additional Tamarind impressions. This impression is inscribed in graphite on the verso “TAM. IMP. ‘FROG CUP’ PRICE ’68” and “2497 / Copperplate Deluxe,” and bears the Tamarind and Daniel Socha blindstamps; “TAM. IMP.” identifies an impression retained by the workshop outside the numbered edition. Image measures approximately 5.5 x 4 inches; sheet measures approximately 22.5 x 17 inches. The sheet shows light toning and minor handling with old tape remnants along the upper verso; image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
