Kenneth Price (American, 1935-2012), Acrobatic Frog Cup, 1968 Color Lithograph

Kenneth “Ken” Price (American, 1935–2012) was a Los Angeles-born artist who helped establish ceramics as a serious form of contemporary sculpture. After earning his BFA from the University of Southern California, he studied with Peter Voulkos at the Otis Art Institute and completed an MFA at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. While Voulkos favored large, forcefully worked clay, Price concentrated on intimate cups. Price worked with Tamarind during the 1960s and later collaborated extensively with Gemini G.E.L. His work is held by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Acrobatic Frog Cup, 1968, six-color lithograph on German Etching wove paper. A small blue frog with a bright red eye reaches toward a squat blue cup containing a pool of green, the objects casting a dark shadow across a pale gray tabletop. The scene is isolated within a large peach-colored field bordered by a thin violet line. Printed by Robert Rogers and published by the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in an edition of 20, with additional Tamarind impressions. Inscribed in graphite on the verso “TAM. IMP.,” titled “ACROBATIC FROG CUP,” and signed and dated “PRICE ’68,” with the Tamarind and Robert Rogers blindstamps; also inscribed “2494” and “German Etching paper.” “TAM. IMP.” identifies this example as a Tamarind impression retained outside the regular numbered edition. Sheet measures approximately 30.25 x 22.875 inches. The sheet shows light overall toning and minor handling, with old mounting tape remnants along the upper verso. Image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
