Kenyan Sericho Pallasite Meteorite (in Silver Pendant)

[ translate ]

**First Time At Auction**

East Africa, Kenya, Sericho, ca. 2016 CE. A gorgeous fragment of a pallasite meteorite in a sterling silver pendant; a shard of celestial material made of shimmering kamacite and olivine. The pallasite is composed primarily of iron with some nickel content known as kamacite, as well as olivine crystal inclusions throughout, olivine is more commonly recognized as the gemstone peridot. Both sides of the slice have been polished until they achieved an incredibly lustrous finish, then covered with a clear glass. The open sterling silver bezel lets the light illuminate the matrix throughout. This pendant is strung on a cord with a lobster clasp as a wearable piece that is "out of this world." Size of pendant: 1.65" L x 0.875" W (4.2 cm x 2.2 cm); cord: 21" L (53.3 cm); silver quality: 92%; weight: 9.2 grams

This meteorite landed in Kenya in prehistoric times, but the extraterrestrial stones were not identified as pallasite material until 2016. Two herders came across the strewn field while searching for a wayward camel, and they realized the striking similarities these strange rocks had with meteorites, so they collected many samples, which were later confirmed as pallasites. People living the area had collected these stunning stones for years, not realizing they came from outer space, and no wonder - this example is gorgeous!
