8 hand-coloured engraved sea charts from the famous Van Keulen Familiy in Amsterdam.
The most representative set of sea charts of Norway from “The Golden Age of Dutch Map Making”. The eight charts shows the sailing routes from Gothenburg to Vardø and are illustrated with typical merchants scenes from every region mapped.
The cartobibliography of Van Keulen’s eight charts is somewhat complicated and even perhaps confusing. But thanks to William B. Ginsberg’s enormous effort to organize the charts in a chronological order, we have since 2012 been able to date the individual charts far more precisely. It might exist until 4 different printing states of each chart due to alterations made on the copper plates. This uniform set seems to have been published in one of the great sea atlases by the Van Keulen company after ca. 1716.
Each map with large cartouches illustrating local people, fishing and hunting, shipping, lumbering etc.
The Van Keulen sea chart publishing company was in the line of a Dutch tradition from Waghenaer and Blaeu in making sea charts and pilot books. The maps were used on board in practical sailing but were also purchased for decorative purposes as works of art. A fine set.
