Khamseh
second half 19th century, 274 x 161 cm, South West Persia, Fars
Published by Bennett as early as 1982 and then still assigned to the Qashqai, this rug was woven by an Arabi tribal group of the Khamseh Federation, possibly as a khan carpet, as the exceptional quality would suggest. The detailed design, the density of the tiny motifs covering both the field and the three medallions, and the dark palette are considered features of the Arabi tribes. A rare and important collector’s item.
BENNETT, IAN, Teppiche der Welt. Munich 1982, p. 244 *** RIPPON BOSWELL, A 50, 21 November 1998, lot 230
Condition
Good condition except for minor repairs. Both finishes backed with a textile band.
