Kiau Chau - German Occupation nickel-plated brass 10 Pfennig Token nd. (1914) (Menzel-2951.4) - Obv: Uniformed bust Friedrich Wilhelm Voigt facing, large 5 countermark / Rev: P.H. within beaded circle - scratches, XF, occupation token type, produced in Berlin, Friedrich Wilhelm Voigt (1849-1922) a.k.a. ‘the Captain of Köpenick’ was a German impostor who, in 1906, masqueraded as a Prussian military officer, rounded up a number of soldiers under his "command", and "confiscated" more than 4,000 marks from a municipal treasury (Wikipedia). The initials at reverse center stand for Paul Herpich, proprietor of a "Konfektionsgeschäft" (fine clothing store) in Berlin. Nowadays grading companies are slabbing these tokens under Kiau Chau, but this attribution is frail and it’s maybe just a Berlin token issue.
