Private Collection, Colorado

Kim Douglas Wiggins occupies a singular place among painters of the American Southwest. Born in 1959 in Roswell, New Mexico, Wiggins built his reputation on expressionist landscapes and historical imagery of the American West, work that has been exhibited at venues including Altermann Galleries in New York and the Autry National Center in Los Angeles. Raised on a ranch in southern New Mexico, he began his artistic life sculpting miniatures of the wildlife around him before turning to paint, and by 1985 had been admitted as the youngest member of a national American impressionist society. His visual language draws on Post-Impressionism, Expressionism, American Regionalism, and the folk-art traditions of the muralist movement — an unlikely marriage of influences that gives his canvases their unmistakable, almost hallucinatory clarity.
