Alexander the Great left such an enormous impact on the world that coins continued to be struck in his name for more than two centuries after his death. This gold stater, with types identical to those of the great conqueror, was issued nearly a century after his death by a city on the Black Sea, either Calchedon in Bithynia or Callatis in Thrace. Recent research and analysis of find spots suggests Calchedon as the mint city, while the traditional attribution employed by Martin Price has been Callatis. (Source: HA inc) . Grade: VF/VF+ ex jewelry, 4 contact points on edge and 2 contact points on obverse from previous mounting, surface of reverse cleaned. Still a very attractive coin though. Material: Gold Weight: 8. 37g Diameter: 18,50 mm Ref. : Price 913 Obverse: Head of Athena right, wearing triple crested Corinthian helmet pushed back on head, bowl decorated with coiled serpent Reverse: ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡOY, Nike standing facing, head left, wreath in outstretched right hand, stylis over left shoulder; KA monogram in left field, AN monogram below wing in left field. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Non EU residents, please take into account that import duties / local import taxes are your responsibility!
