Kipling (Rudyard).- The School Budget, vol. 1, nos. 13 & 14, mimeographed text and wrappers, illustrations, no. 13 first issue without advertisements to inside of wrappers, original pink wrappers, some light rubbing to extremities, but a near-fine set overall, preserved in cloth chemise and slip-case, [Livingston 174; Martindell 64], 8vo, Kent, Horsmonden School, 1898. *** A charming piece of Kiplingiana, rare in such superb condition. Issue number 13 contains a letter by Kipling, written in mock-indignant response to the editors' request by letter that he supply a contribution to the magazine at their rate of 3d. per page (Kipling's market rate at the time reportedly being a shilling a word). In the next issue of the magazine, the editors note the high demand for the earlier issue and that "in after years a set containing Nos. 13 and 14 will be worth wealth untold". Also included is a letter from Max Beerbohm, agreeing that the tone of Kipling's letter is "quite monstrous and unpardonable" and supplying a caricature of the author.
