Kit Carson Rare PPDS as Commander of Fort Garland, 1867; PSA LOA
Partially printed DS
A partially printed report concerning "Persons and Articles employed… at Fort Garland, C.T." 1p, measuring 16.5" x 13", Fort Garland, Colorado Territory, ca. January, 1867. Signed at the lower left by American frontiersman Kit Carson (1809-1868), "C. Carson", and countersigned by Quartermaster James W. Fairfield. The first and only entry lists one Gerard Austin, carpenter, as being paid $75 for "Repairing Govt. Transportation." Clerical docketing on verso. Areas of scattered staining near center, with expected age toning and flattened folds; marginal foxing throughout. Intermittent mounting traces found on verso of margins, resulting in minor offsetting to the reverse. Very good overall with near pristine signature! Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from PSA/DNA.
A legendary frontiersman, trapper, soldier, and Indian agent, Kit Carson's contributions to westward expansion in the United States rank him among the nation's greatest folk heroes. He served as a guide on the famed John C. Frémont explorations of the West, and ended his career as Superintendent of Indian Affairs for the territory of Colorado, a position he occupied until his death.
Fort Garland was an important U.S. Army post in Colorado's San Luis Valley, established in 1858 to protect settlers in the region. After the Civil War in 1866, Carson took command as the Army worked to reassert authority across the West and manage relations with the Ute people. Drawing on his frontier experience, he helped negotiate a temporary peace in 1867, supporting safer travel and settlement. Documents such as this reflect the everyday military and logistical functions- hiring civilian labor, maintaining equipment, and supporting mobility- that underpinned the broader effort to secure and develop the postwar West.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
