Knoll - Ludwig Mies van der Rohe - Daybed - Barcelona day bed - Leather, Steel, Wood

[ translate ]

The Daybed Barcelona has become part of the Olympus of 20th century design. The daybed with roll headrest was designed by Mies van der Rohe together with collaborator Lilly Reich for the New York apartment of Philip Johnson, an architectural historian and - after he had met Mies - an architect in his own right.
It was presented for the first time at the Bauausstellung exhibition in Berlin in 1931, as part of the furnishings of the "bachelor's apartment".
The mattress covering takes up the square pattern of the Barcelona chair, and requires the same workmanship: leather squares worked and sewn by hand, fastened with leather-covered buttons. The cot was specially designed by Mies Van Der Rohe for Philip Johnson's apartment.
Due to its aesthetic characteristics, the Barcelona lounger is included in the series of Barcelona chair and pouf products designed for the pavilion of the 1929 International Exhibition. The cot has a walnut-stained solid wood structure, with eleven leather straps over elastic bands that support the mattress and tubular stainless steel legs.
The mattress padding is in variable density fire-retardant foam covered exclusively in high quality leather. The covering consists of 72 hand-cut and sewn squares, with button quilting. The headrest, in the same color as the leather, is attached to the sommier using straps with snaps.
This product also bears the Knoll. Studio signature created according to the original indications of Mies van der Rohe. The exclusive and sales rights have belonged to Knoll since 1953, transferred directly by the architect and designer Mies van der Rohe.
Like the other original products, the Barcelona cot is also signed with the Knoll. Studio Logo and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's signature is imprinted in the structure of each piece.

L. Mies Van Der Rhoe was born in 1886 in Aachen and died in 1969 in Chicago. For 4 years he designed stucco and ornaments in workshops and studios in Aachen. From 1904 to 1907 he worked with Bruno Paul and, at the same time, studied at the "Kunstgewerbeschule" (applied arts) . From 1908 to 1911 he worked in the architectural studio of Peter Beherens where he met Le Corbusier and Gropius and studied the neoclassical architecture of K. F. Schinkel, which definitely influenced his early works.
In 1911 he left Beherens and in 1912, in Holland, he met H. P. Berlage.
The war interrupts his activity and constitutes at the same time a pause for reflection and the elaboration of a personal poetics: Mies' relationships with the figurative avant-garde, from De Stijl to Expressionism to Dadaism, in fact, date back to these years. Mies was part of the Novembergruppe, founded in 1918, and directed its architectural section from 1921 to 1925. At the same time, he practiced as an architect in Berlin. In this period he developed projects for skyscrapers in steel and glass (1919 and 1920/21) and for country houses in brick and reinforced concrete (1923/24) in Berlin; also in Berlin he created the monument to K. Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg (1926) , of clearly expressionist inspiration.
From 1926 to 1932 Mies was vice-president of the Deutscher Werkbund, for which he organized important exhibitions, including the memorable one at the Weissenhoff experimental district in Stuttgart in 1927.
In 1929 he created the German pavilion at the Barcelona International Exhibition. In the Barcelona pavilion, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe presents the vocabulary of architecture, in a poetic way, enhancing its possibilities. The wall slabs in reddish marble and shiny onyx, which extend under the flat and as if suspended roof, become abstract expressive surfaces. The play of light reflections on the smooth stones, on the metal surfaces, on the chromed steel pillars spills onto two horizontal basins of water. The internal and external spaces interpenetrate harmoniously. Built only as a temporary building for the International Exposition, the pavilion soon became famous for the clarity of its rationalism. After its reconstruction, the superior rhythm of its spaces induces meditation, in a pure architecture, freed from any utilitarian purpose.
From August 1930, designated by Gropius, he was director of the Bauhaus, where he also taught architecture to students in the last semesters, a position he held until 1933, when he was forced to close the school due to pressure from Nazism.
In 1937 he emigrated to Chicago, where he directed the architecture section of the Armor Institute (later Illinois Institute of Technology - IIT) from 1938 to 1958.
A major exhibition dedicated to him in 1947 by the Museum of Modern Art in New York definitively established his fame. Particularly numerous are the works from the American period (Chicago and especially New York) which strongly influenced the architecture of the twentieth century. Among them we should mention the Farnsworth House (Plan/Illinois 1946-1951) , the apartment towers at nos. "860-880 Lake Share Drive" (Chicago, 1948-1951) , the "Seagram Building" (New York, 1956-1959) ; the "Neue Nationalgalerie" (Berlin, 1962-1967) .
