A commemorative monograph with three maps, dedicated to the centennial of the Botanical Garden of the University of Warsaw on Aleje Ujazdowskie, published in 1918 by the Ministry of Religious Denominations and Public Education. December 15, 1818, is considered the date of the garden’s founding, and its first director was Professor Michał Szubert (1787–1860). The garden originally covered 22.5 hectares, but after the November Uprising and the closure of the University, its area was reduced to approximately 5 hectares. The grounds are home to the University of Warsaw Astronomical Observatory, built between 1820 and 1825, as well as the cornerstone of the Temple of Providence, laid in 1792. In 1916, the garden returned to the care of the reestablished University of Warsaw, and in 1917–1918, monuments to its founder, Schubert, and to Prof. Jakub Ignacy Waga were erected there.

January Kołodziejczyk was born on July 10, 1889, in Warsaw; in 1918, when the work was published, he was 29 years old. He was a botanist, educator, and teacher; a professor at the Free Polish University; and the author of academic and school textbooks on botany as well as popular science articles. He specialized in floristics, the history of botany, and nature conservation; he died on March 14, 1949, in Zalesie Dolne near Warsaw and was laid to rest at Powązki Cemetery.

A must-have for collectors of Warsaw-related items, old botanical and horticultural literature, and enthusiasts of the history of the University of Warsaw. A commemorative publication featuring three maps, issued in the landmark year of Poland’s regaining of independence.

The front cover is missing. The text block is in pristine condition, with the pages still uncut; all three maps are preserved.
