Konya
First half 19th century, 191 x 110 cm, Central Anatolia
Characteristically coarse in weave and knotted in brilliant colours, this village rug from the Konya region belongs to the "Yellow Group". The term was coined by Friedrich Spuhler to describe a large number of such carpets in the "Orient Stars" Collection. Here, eight large Memling güls fill the white-ground field. They are surrounded by a light red grid composed of octagons, with nested polychrome diamonds placed at the intersections. The ground colour of the single-stripe border is light red at the lower end and then changes to a golden yellow hue. The remarkably meticulous drawing of the design makes this Konya one of the best examples of its kind. – Original finishes all around, minor repiled areas, very good overall condition.
