Korean Bronze Age / Mumun Period Stone Daggers (2)

East Asia, Korea, Bronze Age, sometimes known as Mumun Period, ca. 900 to 300 BCE. A pair of lovely polished stone daggers, each made from a pale grey stone, with a long, thin body, a narrow, sharp midrib, and a short, tab-like tang. Stone daggers like these, made in the same form as bronze daggers, have been found in dolmens - structures made of massive stones that served as graves for elite Koreans in the late Neolithic and Bronze Age - alongside other grave goods like swords, bells, mirrors, and pottery, signifying the great prestige of the deceased. Size: 0.6" W x 5.95" H (1.5 cm x 15.1 cm)

Provenance: Estate of William Stockton, Colorado, USA; acquired between July 20, 1966 and January 7, 1974 while Mr. Stockton was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. During this period he traveled primarily to Korea, but also to Japan, Vietnam, and other countries in Southeast Asia.

Condition Report: One is intact except for a tiny loss at the tip. The other is repaired from five pieces and has tiny losses to the tip of the blade, the tip of the tang, and one shoulder. Nice deposits on both with light signs of wear. Both have old collection labels on them.
