LOT 0055

Korean Celadon Joined Bowl Saucer Koryo Dynasty

[ translate ]

A hands on ceramic bowl joined to a saucer with an ancient potter’s sensibility that demonstrates exacting experience with glaze and shape.

The bowl is more thinly potted than the saucer and the two pieces have different glazes. The bowl has a brownish celadon glaze that has dripped. The saucer has a more gray celadon with bubbles in the glaze. You can’t see the foot on the bowl but the saucer has the foot that looks like it came from the Ming celadon tradition with an iron red clay foot and a dab of celadon glaze in a circle around the center. Potter’s wheel marks are visible on both the saucer and bowl. The interior well of the bowl shows five spots where the bowl is attached to the bottom saucer.

MEASUREMENTS

5 ¾” (14.6 cm) diameter x 3 3/8” (8.6 cm) tall. Weighs 13 oz (400 g)

CONDITION

The saucer rim has a couple of small rim chips and the bowl has a tiny rim glaze frit. These blend in nicely with the gray green of the glaze, since the clay is very grey in color. Otherwise, there are no chips, breaks or hairlines. The pieces look fresh and entire.

An ancient pair to add to a collection of Korean ceramics. They have that potter’s hands on look.
