Korean Koryo Leaded Bronze Mirror w/ Landscape Relief

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $150**

East Asia, South Korea, Goryeo/Koryo Dynasty, ca. 918 to 1392 CE. A cast-leaded bronze mirror with a polished face, an ornate back, and a small, knobbed handle. The verso is adorned with a landscape scene in low relief showing a figure bathing next to a waterfall and below a large tree. Trace amounts of gold decorate the beautiful relief, suggesting that it was previously gilded. Bronze mirrors that were polished on one side and decorated on the reverse were a popular luxury item coveted throughout East Asia. While they originated in China during the early years of China's development of bronze technology, circa 1700 BCE or possibly earlier, the taste for such mirrors spread beyond China's borders to Korea and Japan. Size: 3.625" in diameter (9.2 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired before 2000

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to recent increases of shipments being seized by Australian & German customs (even for items with pre-UNESCO provenance), we will no longer ship most antiquities and ancient Chinese art to Australia & Germany. For categories of items that are acceptable to ship to Australia or Germany, please contact us directly or work with your local customs brokerage firm.
