Korean Yi Soapstone Animal Sculpture + Chinese Seal

East Asia, Korea, Yi Dynasty (also called Choson Dynasty), ca. 1392 to 1910 CE; China, probably Qing Dynasty, ca. 1644 to 1912 CE. A fine set of two hand-carved stone items from Korea and China. First is a soapstone scene depicting two monkeys as well as a bird standing atop several columnar forms with petite perforations. Second is a stone seal or chop depicting a Foo Dog sitting atop the rectangular column; beneath the column is an inscribed English word reading "Sin." Size of largest (monkeys & bird): 4.7" W x 5.4" H (11.9 cm x 13.7 cm).

Provenance: Estate of William Stockton, Colorado, USA; acquired between July 20, 1966 and January 7, 1974 while Mr. Stockton was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. During this period he traveled primarily to Korea, but also to Japan, Vietnam, and other countries in Southeast Asia.

Condition Report: Korean piece repaired from multiple large pieces, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Chinese piece is intact. Both items have minor abrasions and softening to finer details. Light earthen deposits throughout.
