Kozak
Second half 19th century, 96 x 80 cm, North West Anatolia, Bergama region
Known as "ceyrek" in Anatolia, this small format is typical of carpets woven in the village of Kozak north of Bergama which can differ widely in terms of design. Produced in light colours that create a cheerful appearance, this example shows a honeycomb-shaped double niche at the centre of the apricot field. The tips of its arches are decorated with red double hooks, and two panels placed at its sides contain a sequence of small interlocked mihrabs. A further example of this group was comprehensively discussed by Brüggemann. – Very well preserved, the red kilim ends are somewhat reduced.
BRÜGGEMANN, WERNER/BÖHMER, HARALD, Teppiche der Bauern und Nomaden in Anatolien. Hannover 1980, Nr.79 *** RIPPON BOSWELL, A 58, 11.05.2002, #109 *** ENGELHARDT, EVA, Teppiche - Die Bilder des Orients. Heidelberg 1977, Nr.81
