Kuba Sumakh
Third quarter 19th century, 299 x 244 cm, East Caucasus
Many of the large and always red-ground medallion design sumakhs were made in the Kuba region, often in the workshops of the small town of Kusary which used to be a centre of sumakh production. Boralevi made a compelling case for this in his 1986 monograph. In this very finely and meticulously woven sumakh with a perfectly balanced composition, four dark blue medallions with octagonal centres and yellow octagons laterally offset against them combine into a design block which is separated by large arrows pointing to the field centre from the wide outer sections decorated in a wealth of different motifs. – Very good condition, the original finishes are preserved all around.
BORALEVI, ALBERTO, Sumakh. Flat-Woven carpets of the Caucasus. Florenz 1986, Nr.7 *** RIPPON BOSWELL, A 55, 18.11.2000, #127
