Kuba
first half 19th century, 139 x 113 cm, East Caucasus
This yellow-ground Kuba shows a diamond lattice composed of slightly curved, serrated leaves enclosing delicate plants in its compartments. The wide main border displays an immaculately drawn kufic vine on a blue ground. The specific, very fine knotting structure is characteristic of Kuba weavings made before 1850.
Condition
Signs of age and wear. The brown sections in the borders are completely corroded. The border stripes along both sides have been repiled and the selvedges are replaced.
