Kurdish Kilim

[ translate ]

First half 19th century, 398 x 166 cm, Central Anatolia, Cappadocia

Probably made in a village inhabited by Kurds in the area between Kayseri and Nigde, this large kilim consists of a white field and two wide borders which were woven separately. It belongs to the same group as two kilims from the Orient Stars and Vok Collections sold by us. However, an example published by Petsopoulos and described by the author as an Aydin kilim from West Anatolia is even closer in terms of design. – The white field is decorated with small brocaded blossoms arranged to form colourful horizontal rows as well as eight large, superimposed hooked diamonds. In the vertical borders, pairs of rectangles enclosing hexagons and drawn with lateral parmakli outlines are separated by dark brown horizontal stripes which each contain two white S-motifs. A frieze of perfectly drawn elibelinde figures adorns the elems. Finely woven with meticulous precision, this kilim displays a rich range of strong and brilliant colours that add to its charm. – Good condition, original finishes all around.

RIPPON BOSWELL, A 86, Vok Collection I, 11.04.2015, #4 *** A 52, Orient Stars, 02.10.1999, #43 *** PETSOPOULOS, YANNI, Der Kelim. Ein Handbuch. München 1980, Nr.133
