Signed and dated, “Bregoli 1898/d’après J. Steen” (lower right).

The prototype of circa 1665/8, 79 x 64 cm, is in the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, inv. no. 1717 (K. Braun, Alle tot nu toe bekende schilderijen van Jan Steen, 1980, p.117, no.224, ill.) since 1865, having been in the sale of the collection of Willem, Baron van Brienen, Heer van Groote Lindt, Chamberlain to the King of the Netherlands.
