L. Keizer Sabena / Rapidité vintage poster
Caption Brief: Sabena is an acronym for Société Anonyme Belge d'Exploitation de la Navigation Aérienne. It began operations on May 23, 1923, as the Belgian national carrier and its first paying flight carried passengers from Rotterdam to Strasbourg via Brussels on April 1, 1924. Keizer’s Art Deco indicators facilely convey rapid movement, but the most telling elements of his design are the silhouette of the aircraft–which, though minimal, certainly appears to be a tri-engined Savoia-Marchetti SM-73–and the dial climbing swiftly above the 250 kilometers-per-hour mark–which just so happened to be the cruising speed of the aforementioned craft. Sabena operated until 2001, at which time it filed for bankruptcy.
