George III, England, 2nd half of the 18th century. The dial and movement, signed Devereux Bowly London (free of Clockmakers Company 1718–1759).
Rectangular wooden case, red-lacquered in the "gout chinois". Silvered chapter ring, featuring the hours in Roman numerals and the minutes in Arabic numerals, within a gilt bronze surround, featuring pierced tendrils and heads. Round reserve, surrounded by a laurel garland, with signature. Movement with lever escapement, striking the hour on bell. Striking mechanism can be turned off.
