* LANDER, Richard (1804-1834) and John (1806-1839). Journal of an Expedition to Explore the Course and Termination of the Niger; with a Narrative of a Voyage down that River to its Termination. London: John Murray, 1832.

3 volumes, 8vo (147 x 95 mm). With 3 engraved frontispieces, 4 engraved plates, and 2 engraved maps (one folding and hand-colored). (Some minor spotting.) Contemporary half calf gilt (discreet repair to spine ends vol. I, slight rubbing to spines). Provenance: Al Anderson (signature); Walker (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION. Commissioned by the British Government, Lander returned to West Africa in 1830, accompanied by his brother John. They landed at Badagri on 22 March 1830 and followed the lower River Niger from Bussa to the sea. Despite difficult circumstance they were ultimately successful in descending the last section of the Niger and thereby solving the great river's course and termination. They returned to Britain from Fernando Po via Rio de Janeiro in 1831.
