LARGE 19TH CENTURY RUSSIAN 84 SILVER NIELLO SNUFF BOX

A large Russian 84 Silver and Niello snuff box. The lid of the ware is adorned with a niello engraved medallion depicting an architectural building view surrounded by foliate scroll and geometrical ornaments. The backside of the box is made in the same design. A gold wash interior. Marked with a Silver standard hallmark, an AE makers mark, AC 1894, and other marks, inside. The niello technique, known for its intricate engraved designs filled with contrasting black enamel, showcases the skill of Russian silversmiths. Weight: 195 grams.
