LARGE BRONZE AGE TRILOBATE SPEAR

C. 300 BC or later, Possibly Scythian. Large bronze trilobate spearhead with wide, sharply tapering blades. The Scythians were a warlike nomadic people who dominated the Pontic Steppe (the area North of the Black Sea and stretching as far as Central Asia) in the 7th-3rd centures BC. The are noted for having invented trilobate arrowheads and spears, which feature three blades or fins, were developed to provide extra armour penetration capability and were so successful that they were later adopted by many of the Scythians' foes, mostly the Persians of the Achaemenid Empire. Good condition; beautiful patina. on a custom-made stand. Size: H:235mm/H:220mm/W:68mm (without stand); 350g. Provenance: Property of a professional London art expert; obtained from an old British collection formed in the 1980s.
