LARGE DATED 1603 GERMAN RENAISSANCE BRONZE PHARMACY

Massive and Remarkably Heavy Solid Bronze Grinding Mortar, German, probably Regensburg foundry region, having deep molding (with one original gap), single remaining dolphin lug, the front having raised inscription "SHZ (the last initial partly obliterated with spiteful intent)/SCF/AO/1603", centered on the German Heraldic Shield, 12 1/2" x 11 1/2" diam., 13 1/2" at lug.
