LARGE GROUP OF FIGURES “The Country Musicians” Probably Germany or France, late 19th century / ca. 1900. Bisque porcelain, white, unglazed. Matte surface with finely modeled details. Signed “Warth” on the side of the plinth. The unglazed underside bears the incised model number “632.” An elaborately composed genre scene from a pastoral setting stands on an oval, naturalistic-looking plinth with a relief decoration of plants and interlacing vines. The group of figures consists of two pairs: In the center stands a barefoot youth in a flowing, rustic garment with a wide-brimmed hat, leaning against a roughly hewn tree stump in a contemplative pose. To his right, a hunting dog sits faithfully nestled against him. In front of him, seated, is an older, bearded man who is completely absorbed in playing his violin. The sculpture captivates with the expressive facial expressions of the protagonists as well as the masterful drapery of the robes, which is particularly vividly rendered in the matte bisque porcelain. H: 32 cm. In good condition, appropriate for its age. There are partial, minimal dust deposits and slight scuffs in the recesses of the plinth, which underscore the sculpture’s authentic character.
