LARGE RUSSIAN ICON, ARCHANGEL MICHAEL, 19TH C. Comprising a large and attractive Russian icon depicting the Archangel Michael shown with large wings and attired as a Roman soldier with fiery sword and cross decorated shield. In orthodoxy, the Archangel Michael is considered the Chief Captain of the Hosts of Heaven who fight against the powers of evil. At the upper central margin is inscribed his name THE HOLY ARKHISTRATEGOST MIKHAIL. It is the Archangel Michael who cries out "serviam" as a response to Lucifer's "non-serviam" when God put the angels to the test. 21.25 inches x 14 inches (54 x 35.5 cm).
