LARGE RUSSIAN ICON, MOTHER OF GOD, PESHEKHONOV 1880. Comprising a large, impressive and finely painted icon of the Tikhvin Mother of God. Traditionally executed in egg tempera utilizing the cross hatching technique to build up successive layers of translucent pigments to develop a three dimensional effect. Executed on an ornately incised gilt ground with turquoise enameling in haloes and the borders decorated with faux champlevé enameling. The vestments trimmed in finely painted jewels and overall with extensive gilt highlights. Based on the overall style, technique and especially the jewel trimmed vestments, it is likely the offered icon was produced in the workshop of noted iconographer Vasily Makarovish Peshekhonov (1811-1888) or an iconographer trained in his studio. 28.5 inches x 21 inches (72.4 x 53.3 cm).
