LARGE SCULPTURAL GROUP DEPICTING A COUPLE IN RENAISSANCE COSTUMES Probably Italy, late 19th / early 20th century, earthenware or fine majolica, glazed in an ivory color. An elegantly dressed couple in historicizing 16th-century attire stands on a tall, profiled, and gracefully curved pedestal. The gentleman, wearing a slit doublet, harem pants, and a heavy, fur-trimmed coat, gallantly offers his hand to a lady. She wears a richly decorated dress with characteristic puffed sleeves, an ornate bonnet, and long hair artfully braided into two plaits that reach down to her hips. The design is stylistically reminiscent of literary depictions of couples from the Historicism movement, such as Faust and Gretchen. A scratched-in number is marked on the underside of the hollow body. On the underside, there is a fine, manufacturing-related firing crack in the base’s web; minimal signs of age and wear; otherwise in good, undamaged condition. Dimensions: H: 48 cm.
