Paris: Jean Mariette, 1728.

First edition of this 'report, by the scientist of the expedition, under command of Valette-Laudun, sent in 1720 by the French government to examine the Florida and Louisiana coasts' (Howes). Clark notes that the volume 'describes at great length the physical geography of the French Dominions in Louisiana and the Mississippi Valley, with particular reference to the ports of Orleans, Pensacola, and others'. Howes L-142; Sabin 39276; Streeter II, 1178 ('two of the maps are of considerable interest – the folding map of Pensacola and its harbor, and the folding map of the Gulf Coast from west of the mouths of the Mississippi to Rivière de S. Martin in Florida').

Two parts in one volume, quarto (249 x 180mm). 20 engraved maps and plans and 11 tables, many folding (pinholes in the lower margins of first 3 quires, occasional spots, else fine). Contemporary sprinkled calf, paneled spine decorated and direct-lettered in gilt, sides filleted in blind (some wear at extremities, a few abrasions, sometime furbished). Provenance: 18th-century Jesuit ‘Prof. Paris’ (inscription at head of title).
