From the Library of Alan Milne
LAWRENCE, T.E.

REVOLT IN THE DESERT. JONATHAN CAPE, 1927

large 8vo, large paper issue, NO. 48 OF 315 COPIES (of which 300 were for sale), title in red and black, 19 colour plates, folding map tipped-in at the end, AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR LOOSELY INSERTED, original quarter brown pigskin, brown buckram boards, top edge gilt, the others uncut, green and yellow head- and tail-bands, minor offsetting to endpapers, minor wear and rubbing to edges of binding

LIMITED ISSUE OF THE FIRST EDITION OF THE ABRIDGED VERSION OF "SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDOM". The cost, time and effort taken to produce the subscribers' edition of Seven Pillars (see lot 104) had left Lawrence facing bankruptcy. This was one reason for this edition of the text (reduced to 130,000 words) produced for the general public, and which was received to both critical and popular acclaim.
The autograph letter is to H.W. Jenny Esq. (of 442/443 Strand) apologising for tardiness in replying to his recipient's letter, and sending the promised "note to insert in your 'Revolt in the Desert'...Also here is your horoscope, for which I thank you. It amused me; but I think many parts of it would better fit some of my friends, not myself!". Lawrence then goes on to refer to the curious circumstances in which they met, regretting that "you should have been made the victim of that un-called for impersonation. For myself, I have no business ambitions & no ambitions, I was going to say..." (R.A.F. Bridlington, Yorkshire, 20 November 1934, fold at centre, residue of tape adhesive at corners, with autograph envelope)
