L.D. Warren (American, 1906-1992) Buy More Bonds — I • II • 3 • 4, Philadelphia Record newspaper cartoon, circa 1943 Crayon on board 10-3x4 x 7-3x4 inches (27.3 x 19.7 cm) (image) Signed lower right: L.D. Warren Phila Record Leonard Deakyn "L. D." Warren joined the staff of the Philadelphia Record in 1927. He drew feature illustrations, sports and editorial cartoons, and in the 1930s he started a comic strip featuring Penny Penguin which appeared as a book in 1935. After twenty years with the Record Warren moved to the Cincinnati Enquirer in 1947. His work was syndicated through the McNaught Syndicate from 1951 to 1974. This nifty original drawing of President Franklin D. Roosevelt was likely published, probably in color, in the Philadelphia Record in 1943 or 1944. World War II sales of bonds to the American public were essential tools to raise funds for the war effort. It is titled "Buy More Bonds — I • II 3 • 4" across the top, and the words and numerals are incorporated into the image of a smiling FDR in the same color in which they appear in the title. It is quite ingenious. HID03101062020 © 2026 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved www.HA.comxTexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
