L.D. Warren (American, 1906-1992) Open Switch, Philadelphia Record newspaper cartoon, circa 1940 India ink, lithographic crayon, and gouache on heavyweight paper 15 x 13-3x4 inches (38.1 x 34.9 cm) (image) Signed lower right: L. D. Warren Leonard Deakyn "L. D." Warren joined the staff of the Philadelphia Record in 1927. He drew feature illustrations, sports and editorial cartoons, and in the 1930s he started a comic strip featuring Penny Penguin which appeared as a book in 1935. After twenty years with the Record Warren moved to the Cincinnati Enquirer in 1947. His work was syndicated through the McNaught Syndicate from 1951 to 1974. Uncle Sam has come to the divide in the track in American foreign policy that bedeviled the administration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt since the outbreak of World War II. FDR was solidly behind the United Kingdom in the struggle with Nazi Germany and sought ways to support Britain, yet his administration was constrained by American public opinion and the Neutrality Acts that were passed in the second half of the 1930s to keep the country out of the war. This original is boldly inscribed and signed "To Murray A. Harris" by the artist in addition to his signature in the art at lower right. Mr. Harris was a major collector of original comic art, and he assembled the "Uncle Sam" collection that is offered here.
