[LEGIONS] The 5th Legion Infantry Regiment on the anniversary of the Battle of Kostiuchnówka. Zegrze, July 5, 1917.
Photograph measuring 13.9 x 9 cm. Inscribed on the reverse at the time. Stains on both the reverse and the obverse.
An original photograph depicting a ceremonial march of a Polish Legions unit in Zegrze, with a color guard and soldiers lined up in a long column. On the reverse, a handwritten annotation reads: “On the anniversary of the Battle of Kostiuchnówka, July 5, 1916. Zegrze, July 5, 1917.”
The photograph was taken during the 5th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Brigade of the Polish Legions’ deployment in Zegrze; the regiment had arrived there from Różan on June 29, 1917. Just a few days later, the legionnaires commemorated the first anniversary of the bloody battles at Kostiuchnówka, in which the 5th Regiment suffered particularly heavy losses. During those days, memorial services were held in honor of the regiment’s fallen officers and soldiers. Shortly thereafter, on July 13–14, 1917, the soldiers of the 5th Regiment refused to take the oath during the oath crisis.
A valuable iconographic document related to the memory of the Battle of Kostiuchnówka and the 5th Infantry Regiment of the Polish Legions’ stay in Zegrze immediately prior to the Oath Crisis.
