LÉON-JEAN-BASILE PERRAULT
French
1832 - 1908
A REST IN THE SHADE

signed L- Perrault and dated 1879 (lower left)
oil on canvas
39¾ by 53 in.
101 by 134.5 cm

Condition Report:
Not examined out of the frame. Lined. The work has a heavy varnish, and some areas are quite thickly painted. Widely patterned but stable craquelure on the mother and child. Fine, barely perceptible craquelure in the background and foreground. Faint vertical and horizontal stretcher marks. There are repairs visible to the naked eye: a 3 inch 'C' shaped repair at center right; a 2 x 2 inch circular repair near the mother's ankle; at lower right a 2 inch sideways 'S' shaped repair and two 2 inch triangular repairs; and an area of repair in the lower right corner. Under UV: heavy varnish fluoresces green. In addition to the aforementioned repairs, there are scattered brushy dots and dashes of retouching on the mother and child; scattered dashes and dots of retouching and thin lines of inpainting to address prior craquelure in the background and foreground; two 1⁄2 inch vertical repairs near upper left and upper right corners; and some inpainting to address prior frame abrasion along upper, lower and right edges.
