Augmented edition, from the library of Napoleon I at Fontainebleau, of an important and extensive bilingual work on military and nautical terms, ‘a major step in maritime lexicography’ (Hoffmann, et al., eds., Languages for Special Purposes, p.1927). Lescallier was Prefect in the French navy, and served as governor of French Guiana before Napoleon appointed him Consul General to the United States in 1810; Lescallier sent a copy of this edition of his Vocabulaire to Thomas Jefferson in 1808. A large copy with some deckle edges. Polak 5886 (‘la meilleure edition’); Goldsmiths' lists only the previous two editions.

3 volumes, quarto (287 x 216mm). Half-title in vol. 2, two engraved headpieces and 20 engraved plates by Masqualier after the author’s designs, and 3 folding tables in vol. 2 (scattered spotting, a little browning in vol. 3, light dampstain at lower fold of last 2 plates). Contemporary French mottled calf gilt with arms of Napoleon I on sides [Olivier 2652, fer 7 and 19] and ‘Fontainebleau’ on front covers, gilt spines with red and black leather labels, marbled edges, binder’s ticket of Ve. Guyol (‘Imprimeur et Relieur de la Marine’ in each volume (lightly repaired). Provenance: Napoleon I (1769-1821; binding) -- Baron Verani Masin, Officier de Marine (title inscription) -- Margaillan, French bookseller at Milan (booklabel) – monogram stamp D on titles – Prince Constantin Radziwill (1850-1920; friend and model for Marcel Proust; chateau d’Ermenonville bookplate).
