LIBRARY CO., LTD
LONDON. 5 Shares of £1. black. No 2023. Founded 1862 to rival Mudie's Select Library (1842-1937) and W.H. Smith & Son's Subscription Library (1860-1961), but without much success as the company had to declare bankruptcy in 1865. Note that commercial libraries in the Victorian age did more than just carry novels. They often printed catalogues of their collections to give or sell to subscribers. These catalogues show a wealth of publications, from biographies, fiction, drama, history, periodicals to poetry, religion and foreign works. First time in our auctions.
