[LIMITED EDITIONS CLUB]. MATISSE, Henri (1869–1954), illustrator. –– JOYCE, James (1882–1941). Ulysses. New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1935. 4to. 6 etchings on white paper and 20 reproductions of preliminary sketches on yellow and blue paper after Henri Matisse. Original publisher’s brown buckram gilt; original board slipcase, printed paper label on spine (toning). Provenance: Lyndon Holt Landon (bookplate). LIMITED EDITION, number 278 of 1,500 SIGNED BY HENRI MATISSE ON COLOPHON. The text of this edition is based on that of the 1932 Odyssey Press’s second printing, making it the most accurate to be published in the United States. Henri Matisse famously submitted illustrations inspired by Homer’s The Odyssey when commissioned for this project, remarking that “I’ve never read Joyce’s Ulysses and it’s quite plausible that I never will.” The only book illustrated by Matisse to be published in the United States, Matisse asked that preliminary sketches of each engraving be included to show the artistic progression of each image. A FINE COPY. The Artist and the Book, 197; LEC Bibliography 71; The American Livre de Peintre 32; Duthuit and Garnaud 6; Slocum and Cahoon A22.
