LIN FENGMIAN (1900-1991), ATTRIBUTED TO, CHINESE PAINTING OF LADY HOLDING LOTUS
A Chinese painting attributed to Lin Fengmian (1900-1991), lady holding lotus. This painting depicts an ancient-costumed lady sitting quietly while holding a lotus flower. The lady sits peacefully in cross-legged posture with an elevated coiffure. Clad in a wide-sleeved robe of blue and cyan, her garment is rendered with fluid broad washes blending blue, white and ink, making the skirt light and elegant. The background is divided symmetrically: sparse ink plum branches on one side and plain hanging curtains on the other, with a colourful butterfly ornament at the lower right corner. Alternation of solid form and void creates a condensed, simple space.
Ink and color on paper, mounted.
Image: 68 x 67 cm.
Note: The work bears an inscription to Gustav Ecke and an inscription in the name of Lin Fengmian, with seal marks.
Provenance: By repute, from an important private collection.
Gustav Ecke (1896-1971) was a German art historian and scholar of Chinese art. He joined Amoy University in 1923, later taught at Qinghua University and Fujen University in Beijing, and was associated with the National Institute of Architecture. He was a pioneering scholar of Chinese hardwood furniture and published Chinese Domestic Furniture in 1944. In 1945 he married artist and scholar Tseng Yu-Ho (Zeng Youhe). The couple moved to Hawaii in 1949, where Ecke served as curator of Chinese art at the Honolulu Academy of Arts and as professor of Asian art at the University of Hawaii from 1950 to 1966.
