LIN ZEXU (1785-1850), ATTRIBUTED TO, CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY
A work of Chinese calligraphy attributed to Lin Zexu (1785-1850). On the right side stand the large monumental characters "Jia De Yong Nian Zhi Lou" ("Pavilion of Virtue and Longevity"). The brushwork is powerful and expansive, with substantial, solid strokes. Broad and stable character structures deliver overwhelming momentum. The smaller characters flow freely with aged, moist ink. The contrast between large and small characters creates a well-balanced composition with judicious density.
Ink on paper, mounted.
Image: 31 x 132 cm.
Note: The work bears an inscription in the name of Lin Zexu, with seal marks. The inscription is dated Dingchou (1817).
Provenance: By repute, from an important private collection.
Gustav Ecke (1896-1971) was a German art historian and scholar of Chinese art.
