An appointment for Samuel S. Carroll as Captain in the Fourth Regiment of Infantry. Signed by President Lincoln and countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. Provenance: The Lloyd Ostendorf Collection of Lincolniana; Bonhams & Butterfields (consignor notes).
Samuel Sprigg Carroll (1832-1893) graduated West Point in 1856 and was a career army officer who rose to the rank of brigadier general during the Civil War. He served as commander of the famed "Gibralter Brigade" at the Battle of Gettysburg, playing a key role in the defense of Cemetery Hill and repulsing a portion of Pickett's Charge. Carroll suffered wounds at the Battles of Widerness and Spotsylvania Court House. He retired as a major general, U.S. Army, for disability resulting from wounds received in battle.
