– “ASIA POLY-GLOTTA Linguarum Genealogiam, cum Literis, [..]”. – “AFRICA POLY-GLOTTA Scribendi Modos Gentium exhibens”. – “AMERICA cum Supplementis Poly-Glottis”. COMPLETE SET of 4 18th-cent. partly handcol. engraved linguistic maps with cartouche & legends (dep. various alphabets) by S. Dorn after G. Henselius. All publ. by “Officina Homanniana[=heirs of J.B. Homann]” (Nürnberg, ca. 1741 or later), ca. 16 x 20 cm. (image), behind passepartout & uniformly framed (behind glass).

¶ Rare complete set of the earliest linguistic maps of the four continents (incl. tables with alphabetic characters of various languages) engraved by the German print-maker Sebastian Dorn (active ca. 1750) & published in a rare work on comparative linguistics by the German philologist Godofredus Henselius (=Gottfried Hensel, 1687-1765), titled “Synopsis Universae Philologiae [..]” of which the first edition was published in 1741 in Nuremberg by the heirs of the German cartographer Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724). The maps were designed in the belief at the time that all languages spoken in the world derive from a common origin in Hebrew. In most countries the beginning of the Lord’s Prayer (“Pater Noster”, Our Father Who Art In Heaven) is engraved in local languages & writing systems. – A few imperfections (second map with a few small rubbed spots in outer left part, third map with small repair in outer right part, sl. foxed/ browned), but nevertheless in good condition (not examined out of frame).
