Calligraphy Couplet in Running Script
A pair of scrolls, ink on decorated paper, signed by the artist Shi'an Jushi, with three artist's seals Liu Yong zhi yin, Shi'an and Yuci duzuo kan quan, with a collector's seal Yang Longsheng zhencangon each panel, with the exterior of each scroll inscribed by Yang Longsheng (1915-2013) with a biography of Liu Yong dated renwu.
47 1/4 x 11 1/4in (120 x 29cm), each scroll (2).

This couplet bears a collector's seal of Yang Longsheng. Born into a wealthy family in Dabu County, Meizhou, Guangdong Province, Yang Longsheng grew up surrounded by the art collection that his family amassed. He launched his artistic journey with woodblock printing, and later honed his skills in painting and calligraphy under the tutelage of renowned artist Qi Baishi (1864-1957). In addition to pursuing his artistic passions, Yang Longsheng also played a role in two significant battles, including the Battle of Tai'erzhuang in 1938 and the Battle of Changsha the following year. In 1947, Yang Longsheng's solo exhibition of woodblock prints took place in Lushan, Jiangxi. It was attended by Chiang Kai-shek (1887-1975), who met Yang Longsheng during the event. Yang Longsheng had a broad network in the art world, and many notable artists, including Qi Baishi, Zhang Daqian (1899-1983), Pu Ru (1896-1963), Guan Shanyue (1912-1983), Yu Youren (1879-1964), Huang Junbi (1898-1991), and Zhao Shao'ang (1905-1998), who all dedicated works to him. In 1986, he relocated to Los Angeles, United States.
